Chacala Music Festival March 15-18 2018
The Mission of the Chacala Music Festival is to provide an annual celebration & a year-round calendar of wide ranging arts performances & events for neighbors of & visitors to Chacala and position our community as a traditional Mexican beach town with high quality artistic values & a rich cultural life.

Artist Residencies are abundantly fun and exciting. Growing and learning new techniques along with meeting new people in the artist world are what residencies are all about. What sets Chacalart apart from other residencies is the choices you'll have for your creativity.
Playa Chacala is a magical place. It naturally draws visitors to its shore, enveloping their spirits in an energy that can only be produced by the sea. ​​

You will have the opportunity to spread your passion for your craft among local school children through our workshop programs & participate. Enjoy a relaxed environment with other writers & help us cultivate a love for books in this rural part of Mexico.
The Residency will coincide with another ChacaLit program known as the Post-FIL Retreat. This is a group of publishing professionals who will be visiting Playa Chacala after their time at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. The Retreat will take place from 3 December to 17 December 2017.

Altavista Petroglyphs
The Altavista petroglyph complex is located near the village and beach-town of Chacala, south of the Compostela Municipality, in Nayarit Mexico.
The area is known as "La Pila del Rey", "Chacalán", "El Santuario", "The Petroglyphs” or "the Altavista petroglyphs", near the Jaltemba Bay, in the Pacific Ocean of Nayarit.
This region was originally home to the largely unstudied Tecoxquin (Tequectequi) native culture dating from approximately 2000 BC to 2300 BCE. It contains 56 petroglyphs whose antiquity cannot be accurately determined. Aside from its cultural and archeological importance, the site remains an important religious center for the Huicholes who still leave offerings and perform ceremonies here.
In prehispanic times, the Compostela municipality area was inhabited by the Mazatán peoples, tributary of Xalisco-Zacualpan Kingdom.

La Peñita Market on thursdays
For the first time, we had the pleasure of visiting ‘tianguis’ in La Penita de Jaltemba, and what a pleasure it was! Tianguis (pronounced tee-ang-gees) is Mexico’s version of a swap meet or flea market but offers more than just practical items, including fun things like bright green river turtles, colorful fish and birds, genuine and costume jewelry, new clothes and shoes, Mexican arts and crafts, and of course, all kinds of fresh foods and snacks. After all, it wouldn’t be Mexico without the tasty treats!
